“Hot Rod Movie Night : Volume 1” is the first DVD in our series featuring full length
films from the 40’s to the 70’s. In “Volume 1” we feature open-wheeled footage!
We use dual-layer discs in order to get 3 full length movies on one DVD without
any loss in quality, and like all our discs, they are burned in an NTSC format,
and will play on all DVD players around the world.
Blonde Comet (1941) – 65 min
Beverly Blake, the ‘Blonde Comet,” and the daughter of a tire-manufacturer, gets behind the wheel of a
race-car, and is soon tearing up the tracks and winning races in Italy, France and Germany (obviously
prior to 1938 when those countries were no longer running international car races in Europe.) She comes
back to race on American tracks. She meets Jim Flynn, another race-driver, and a rivalry is created,
along with a romance. Beverly gives up her chance to win THE BIG RACE by letting Jim race her car and
he wins. His win also means a triumph for the racing-car carburetor he has invented and also for the tires
manufactured by her father. Lots of great open-wheeled racing footage, with shots from Monaco and
Donnington Park along with excellent footage of American tracks. Slightly choppy race footage for about
the first 15 minutes as the original transfer to digital format had the incorrect framing rate. (b&w)
The Big Wheel (1949) – 89 min
Featuring Mickey Rooney, this is your typical vintage racing movie, with scenes from actual Indy 500’s
spliced in with shots of Rooney sawing the wheel with a screen behind him (think Saturday Night Live),
but the racing footage is very good, and of course the acting is top notch. (b&w)
The Wild Ride (1960) – 59 min
A rebellious punk of the beat generation spends his days as an amateur dirt track driver in between
partying and troublemaking. He eventually kidnaps his buddy’s girlfriend, kills a few police officers and
finally sees his own life end in tragedy. This is the original version of this film, not the re-cut version where
an actor plays Nicholson’s character as a flashback. (b&w)
