“Hot Rod Movie Night : Volume 6” is the sixth DVD in our series featuring full length
films from the 40’s to the 70’s. In “Volume 6” we feature hot rod movies from the 1970’s!
We use dual-layer discs in order to get 3 full length movies on one DVD without
any loss in quality, and like all our discs, they are burned in an NTSC format,
and will play on all DVD players around the world.
The California Kid (1974) – 74 min
Martin Sheen stars in this cult classic which features a 1934 Ford three-window coupe. Taking place in the
hills of California, a corrupt sheriff decides to eliminate speeders by simply pushing them off the road in his
1957 Plymouth Belvedere squad car. A couple Navy sailors are bounced off the road by the corrupt sheriff,
one of them being the brother of our hero, Martin Sheen, who decides to get even. He deliberately speeds in
his Ford coupe in order to provoke the sheriff. As the climactic scene unfolds, it’s a showdown between
Sheen and the sheriff. There are quite a few recognizable faces in this 1974 film, including Nick Nolte, Michelle
Phillips (of The Mamas & Papas), Vic Morrow, and several other characters that fans of 1970’s TV shows will
recognize. Good quality, but not as clear as the other two movies on this DVD (color).
Gone In 60 Seconds (1974) – 98 min
One of the all-time great cult classics, this is the original 1974 version by H.B. Toby Halicki that
centers on a group of car thieves and the 48 cars they must steal in a matter of days. Far superior to
the 2000 remake featuring Nicholas Cage, this film was famous for having wrecked and destroyed 93
cars in a 40-minute car chase scene (some of them unintentionally). The film was shot without a
formal script, and many of the chase scenes occur on public roads, where puzzled and sometimes
frightened bystanders stare in amazement. Lots of great cars in this film, the most famous of course
being the 1973 Ford Mustang nicknamed “Eleanor”. Shown in letterbox format, this is from a
remastered laserdisc version released over 15 years ago, and is in stereo. Excellent quality (color).
Hot Rod (1979) – 95 min
Also known by the title “Rebel Of The Road”, this is another hot rod cult classic! The plot revolves around a
wealthy local businessman named Munn, a man who literally owns the city. When the National Drags come to
town, everyone assumes the businessman’s son will win the competition, but a young guy with some drag
racing skills arrives with the intent of winning the race, unaware of the fixes and underhanded deals that Munn
has already arranged to guarantee his son will win. Lots of great scenes (and cars) in this one, and typical of
the era, there are a lot of car chases in the “Dukes Of Hazzard” and “C.H.i.P.s” style, plus a soundtrack that
seems to be plucked from both American Graffiti and The Buddy Holly Story. Excellent quality (color)
