The Deadly Years
The 1973 season was extended to 15 races, with Brazil and Sweden hosting
their first Formula 1 events. Lotus and Tyrrell won 12 of the 15 races in a
heated Constructors’ Trophy battle, but tragically, Tyrrell driver Francois Cevert
was killed in the final race of the season. Team Tyrrell, and remaining driver
Jackie Stewart, withdrew from the race, graciously handing the coveted
Constructors’ Trophy to Lotus. As the 1974 season unfolded, Clay Regazzoni
and Emerson Fittipaldi were tied in points going into the last race of the season,
with Fittipaldi taking the championship. 1975 saw an amazing 9 different winners
during the season, with a resurgent Ferrari Team (led by Niki Lauda) winning
the F1 championship as well as the Constructors’ Trophy.
