Guts And Glory (Vol 1)

2-DVD’s (282 minutes)

1967 Southern 500 – Darlington, SC – (23 min)
Condition (VG) – Great action, and some very hard crashes, very typical of Darlington back in the 60’s. Buddy Baker gets
caught up in a bad wreck with his Dodge Charger, while we see the usual case of blown engines causing cars to spin out in their
own oil. Richard Petty once again shows why he is The King. Includes some qualifying and some good garage footage…

1968 Southeastern 500 – Bristol, TN – (11 min)
Condition (VG) – The short track at Bristol looked very different back in 1968. With a mere 19,000 fans packing the stands,
Bristol had not yet taken on the “stadium” look, but the action was just as fierce back then as it is today. Richard Petty,
driving his famous #43 Plymouth Road Runner, loses his brakes with about 25 laps to go, but he uses other cars as a
guardrail to help him through the turns. Some 3-wide racing with Pearson and LeeRoy Yarbrough as the laps wind down…

1968 Old Dominion 500 – Martinsville, VA (15 min)
Condition (VG) – Some great action in this one! In typical Martinsville style, there’s a crash in turn 1
of lap 1 involving the front row of cars. Some unbelievable safety related issues that we would NOT see today,
like Buddy Baker’s car going up in flames in the pits, and a crash at the entrance to pit lane that isn’t cleared, and
cars snake around the wreck with only a foot or two to spare to get down pit lane.

1968 Rebel 400 – Darlington, SC (20 min)
Condition (VG) – Original ABC Wide World Of Sports coverage, lots of Mercurys, Fords, and Mopars!
Cale Yarborough smacks a wall, then later blows up his engine. Buddy Baker shoves Charlie Glotzbach into the guardrail
as he passes for the lead, Glotzbach and Baker battle for the next few laps. Richard Petty struggles in this race,
but ends up finishing 3rd. David Pearson brings home the victory in his Mercury. A sign of the times, Pearson is
interviewed while still in his car (before heading to Victory Lane), and he’s already smoking a cigarette!

1968 Carolina 500 – Rockingham, NC (13 min)
Condition (VG) – Some good close-up film of pit stops on this one. Several blown engines, and many driver swaps.
Richard Petty blows up his Hemi, then goes in as a relief driver, and then blows up the engine in that car! The Allison Brothers
take 1st and 2nd place, while the little known James Hylton takes 3rd. Very high track temps at this race cause a high attrition
rate, as Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, Buddy Baker, Bud Moore, David Pearson, and LeeRoy Yarbrough all take DNF’s…

1968 Southern 500 – Darlington, SC – (23 min)
Condition (VG+) – The new Dodge Chargers are here. The field consists of 17 Fords, 6 Dodges, 5 Mercurys, 6 Plymouths,
7 Chevys, and a Buick! There are two major wrecks in this race, including a violent 9-car pileup. Richard Petty debuts a device
to hold his head  up in the turns, a throttle spring attached from his helmet ear hole to his shoulder! Cale Yarborough is
simply phenomenal in this race. He is so exhausted that by the end, he can’t stand up in Victory Lane.

1969 Southern 500 – Darlington, SC – (23 min)
Condition (VG) – Turn 1 at Darlington was finally widened this year, and the action is as good as it gets. The 1969 Camaro
Pace Car can be seen clearly in this film. We also see Richard Petty during his short-lived run in a Ford Torino while he
was at war with the Plymouth Division. This race had a rain delay, and we can see how far NASCAR has come in the past
40+ years. The race was restarted while there’s still huge water puddles on pit road, making for some bizarre scenes!

1969 Atlanta 500 – Atlanta, GA – (11 min)
Condition (VG) – Not part of the above film series on Darlington, this is a short 11 minute highlight reel
from the old TV show “Car And Track”, narrated by the colorful Bud Lindemann. While the film is not as good
as the Darlington footage above, Bud Lindemann’s descriptions of this race are priceless.

1969 American 500 – Rockingham, NC – (12 min)
Condition (VG) – This film contains a quick recap of the 1969 season, as this was the last points race of the year.
Two winged 1969 Dodge Daytonas are on the pole, and Bobby Allison has a pretty severe crash that he walks away from.

NOTE : These are NOT the “Back In The Day” programs (hosted by Dale Earnhardt Jr.) that appeared on
TV few years ago. However, some of these films ARE the actual ones used on those broadcasts. The films
contained on these DVD’s were originally aired back in mid-1990’s and do NOT have the little pop-up
balloons or trivia notes that appeared in the “Back In The Day” programs. Please understand that these
highlight reels were originally shot on film, not video. I am trying to be as honest as I can about the film
quality. These films were originally intended for the smaller TV sets of the 60’s, so they may appear grainy
on the big TV sets of today.
