Drag Racing #4 : Funny Car Festival
1-DVD (97 Minutes)
Two 1980’s Funny Car videos on 1 DVD! The source of this footage comes
from some old VHS tapes I had. Please note, these are not ‘Diamond P Sports’
style productions, but the quality of the video, camera work, and especially the
audio, are excellent! Great footage of how Funny Cars were just before the
advent of on-board computers and spaceship-style bodies.
1987 Coca-Cola Classic (50 min)
In 1986 funny car driver Billy Meyer built a state-of-the-art track in Texas, and as soon as it was built, national et and
mph records fell. In 1987, Meyer held a premier event called the Coca-Cola Classic at his Texas Motorplex facility, and
it was a Funny Car extravaganza. Raymond Beadle came out of retirement with his famous Blue Max Funny Car to run an
astounding 5.51, and at the time the top NHRA Funny Cars (on other tracks) were running in the 5.60 range. Pat Austin
ran an amazing 6.19 in Top Alcohol Funny Car. This is a fantastic video, and the sound is phenomenal (crank it up!). Some
great footage of Don Gay Jr. (alcohol) and the late Scott Kalitta.
1988 U.S. All-Pro Funny Car Championship (47 min)
From Raceway Park in Englishtown NJ, this is another great Funny Car fest, again showing some Funny Cars that were
rarely seen on NHRA broadcasts, as well as some jet cars and wheelstanders. The U.S. All-Pro Funny Car
Championship was a premier event for East Coast drag racers, but it also brought out the big guns, such as John
Force, and the Hawaiian Punch car driven by Johnny West. Included in this coverage is the English Leather Calendar
Girl Contest held at the track, featuring pretty 1980’s girls in bikinis. This video was originally titled ‘Fuel Freaks’.
