Niki Lauda qualified on pole in his Ferrari followed by James Hunt (McLaren) and Mario Andretti (Lotus). It was
raining on race day but the track was drying as the race started. Most drivers decided to start on slicks. Lauda
had the advantage at the start and went into the lead, but Mario Andretti managed to quickly overtake both
James Hunt and Niki Lauda simultaneously to take the lead. Gunnar Nelson started the race on wet tires and
was up to 7th place after starting from 16th on the grid. Nilsson soon climbed up to 2nd while Lauda fell behind
Scheckter and then drifted back behind Hans Stuck and Arturo Merzario (Shadow), who was driving for
Riccardo Patrese because of a contract dispute. By Lap 10 the track was nearly dry, and Nilsson and Merzario
had to pit for tires, putting James Hunt up to second. On Lap 12, Mario Andretti stopped with an engine failure
and suddenly James Hunt was the new leader. Alan Jones continued his incredible drive and passed Hans Stuck
and Jody Scheckter to take 2nd position, but he could not get past James Hunt. Gunnar Nilsson had fought back
to third place but went out with engine failure. On Lap 44 James Hunt’s Cosworth engine suddenly exploded,
putting Alan Jones into the lead. Jones completed the race without drama to score his first win and the first
World Championship victory for the Shadow team. Niki Lauda was 2nd , Hans Stuck 3rd.

This is the complete race without commentary, for hard-core Formula 1 fans only!
