1988 British Grand Prix

1-DVD (99 Minutes)

This is the complete race as broadcast on LIVE TV.

A surprise in qualifying as the front row had a pair of Ferraris. Pole position went to Gerhard Berger,
followed by his teammate Michele Alboreto. The two McLarens of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were 3rd
and 4th respectively. It was raining on race day, and at the start Gerhard Berger took the lead, but
Ayrton Senna went past Alboreto to take second place. By lap 14, Ayrton Senna, arguably the greatest wet
weather driver in F1 history, passed Gerhard Berger to take the lead. The hometown favorite was of
course Nigel Mansell, and the British crowd went wild as he sliced his way through the field. On lap 24,
Alain Prost, who was struggling towards the back of the pack after starting 4th, withdrew from the race,
stating his car was not handling well. It was a controversial decision by the French driver, and many
accused him of simply giving up (Alain was not known for being competitive on wet tracks). The end result
of the 1988 British Grand Prix was Ayrton Senna, followed by Nigel Mansell, and then Alessandro Nannini.
In fourth place was Mauricio Gugelmin in the March, followed by Nelson Piquet and Derek Warwick.

This is an original BBC broadcast, with commentary by Murray Walker and James Hunt. The video is
slightly choppy due to an incorrect framing rate, but this is the best we have at this time (and the best
we’ve seen anywhere). The footage is quite clear, and very watchable!
