|1993 British Grand Prix - Complete Race
|1-DVD : 118 min. Quality : Excellent
|This is the complete race as broadcast on live TV.
|For the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Tyrrell team had two of the new 021 chassis ready for
Andrea de Cesaris and Ukyo Katayama, while Benetton's hopes of using the new pneumatic-valve Ford V8
disappeared because of delays at Cosworth. McLaren seemed to be having a speed disadvantage, which
was soon determined to be an aerodynamic problem. Technological differences aside, the battle was on
between Alain Prost (Williams) and Ayrton Senna (McLaren). In this 9th race of the season, there had
only been two winners all season, Alain Prost with five victories, and his arch rival Ayrton Senna with
three wins. Alain Prost qualified on pole, followed by his teammate Damon Hill, third going to young
Michael Schumacher, and Ayrton Senna in the fourth position. The Ferrari Team of Jean Alesi and
Gerhard Berger had a miserable showing, placing twelfth and thirteenth on the grid respectively.
At the start, Damon Hill jumped out in front of Alain Prost, but all eyes were on Ayrton Senna as he
lunged from fourth to second place, overtaking Schumacher and Prost in turn 1. Hill began to build a big
lead as Senna battled to keep Prost behind him. On lap seven Prost finally went ahead and a few laps later
Senna dropped behind Schumacher to sit in fourth. The two Williams drivers swapped fastest laps while
further back down the field Berger parked his Ferrari, explaining to the team that it was too dangerous
to drive. Gradually Alain Prost closed on Damon Hill, and the task was completed when a Safety Car was
sent out after Luca Badoer (Scuderia Italia) crashed his evil-handling Lola-Ferrari at Woodcote. When
the track becomes too dangerous to drive on, the Safety Car comes out and leads the F1 cars round at a
slow pace until the track is cleared.
The race restarted four laps later, but on lap 42, Damon Hill's engine blew and Alain Prost took the lead.
When the checkered flag dropped, it was Prost followed by Schumacher, while Senna had third place
until his McLaren broke on the final lap (he would end up fifth).
Original BBC broadcast, with commentary by Murray Walker, and filling in for the recently
deceased James Hunt is Sir Jackie Stewart. Includes pre-race and post-race.
