|1988 Formula 1 Season Review
|1-DVD : 171 min. (2 hours 51 min) Quality : Excellent
|A wonderful review of the 1988 F1 season, covering each race in detail, and so much
more! Originally produced at the end of the 1988 season, this review is nearly 3 hours
long, burned on a dual-layer DVD to maintain quality. The year Ayrton Senna captured his
first title, the final year for turbo cars, and one of the most exciting years ever in F1!
|Alain Prost vs. Ayrton Senna, the legendary feud between two of the greatest F1 drivers ever, began in earnest in
1988 when Alain Prost convinced Team McLaren to sign a young Ayrton Senna as his teammate. Their personalities
clashed from the start, with Senna being a brash risktaker, pushing the car to its limits every lap, compared to Prost's
more cautious and calculating style, preferring to save tires and fuel for a strong finish . At the end of the 1988
season, the McLaren duo would win 15 of the 16 races on the F1 schedule (Senna with 8 wins, Prost with 7). This was
the final year for turbocharged engines in F1, and with new engines coming for 1989, McLaren was the only team to
bother building a new chassis for this final turbo year. And in a perfect storm scenario, Honda stepped up to supply
McLaren with some incredible powerplants, meaning that Team McLaren were going to be tough to beat in 1988.
As it would be for the next couple years, Senna exchanged wins with Prost, while the rest of the field
watched in amazement. In fact, the only non-McLaren win all year came at the Italian Grand Prix, when
Ferrari's Gerhard Berger managed a .502 second win over his teammate Michele Alboreto. And the
excitement of the partisan Italian crowd, seeing a Ferrari 1-2 finish, was indescribable, especially considering
the entire season had been the 'Senna and Prost Show'. To add even more drama, Senna was leading the
Italian Grand Prix, but on the second to last lap, he collided with a slower car, handing the win to the Ferraris.
The season would come down to the wire, with Senna (90 points) edging out Prost (87 points) to allow the
Brazilian to capture his first championship. Team McLaren was so dominant that 3rd place
Gerhard Berger (41 points) was 46 points behind 2nd place Prost, while the Constructor's Championship
had McLaren/Honda amassing an incredible 199 points to second place Ferrari's 65 points.
