The mid-1980's saw a back and forth battle between the Ford Mustang 5.0, Camaro Z/28, and Pontiac Trans Am. By 1987, the
automotive media were focused on pitting the 1987 Mustang 5.0 against the turbocharged 1987 Buick Grand National, while the GM
Ponycars (Firebird and Camaro) had taken a backseat. But in 1987, General Motors, with the end of Buick Grand National
production, released a larger 5.7 liter engine in their Camaro and Firebird models to combat the Mustang 5.0. Even though the
Mustang, Camaro, and Trans Am had similar horsepower levels in 1987, the lighter Mustang, with the smaller engine, remained
dominant. Over the next 5 years, GM would gradually increase horsepower levels on the Camaro and Firebird, and by 1992, the Z/28
would produce 245 hp, the Trans Am 240 hp. However, GM's attempts at combating the Mustang would prove somewhat futile, as
Ford still saw no reason to improve on their original 225 hp rating for their Mustang 5.0 and GT models. Road tests of the day
proved the Mustang was still the car to beat. Then in 1993, General Motors dropped a bomb by installing their 275hp Corvette LT-1
engine into their totally redesigned 1993 Camaros and Firebirds, and the floodgates opened. Within 2 short years, companies like
SLP (Street Legal Performance ) were selling 300hp+ cars through GM dealerships, Ford quickly injected new life into their aging
5.0 liter Mustangs, Mitsubishi, Dodge, and even Nissan quickly jumped into the Musclecar pool. The Musclecar Era was reborn...
This DVD is a collection of television road tests from those turbulent, fast paced 1993-1995 years. Each road test is approximately
5-10 minutes long.
