1996 IROC Race - Daytona - Dale Earnhardt
The IROC Racing Series (International Race Of Champions) was a series created to test driver skill, using identically prepared cars. The
series began in 1974, and included professional drivers from various walks of life, including NASCAR, Formula 1, Indy, and many others.
Over the years, the series used many different brands of cars, including Porsche 911's and Chevrolet Camaros. In 1996, the series switched
over to the new Pontiac Firebird, which the IROC Series continues to use to this day. The IROC cars were always impossible to tell apart
from one another, with the exception being that each car was painted a different color to help identify the driver. Since the cars were so
equally prepared, IROC Racing was always extremely tight, and a winning driver needed an understanding of aerodynamics, slipstreaming,
and of course, they had to have nerves of steel.
Here we see the legendary Dale Earnhardt, at the opening race of the 1996 IROC Series in Daytona, at his very best. The Intimidator seems
to hang back in the pack for most of the race, then with just a few laps to go, he slices and dices his way up to the front to take the win. We
also see a very disgruntled Terry Labonte (who led most of this race) in a very uncharacteristic (for Terry anyway) post race interview.
